Fergie’s Comedy Show is premier stand-up comedy every Sunday night. It’s a free show and open to the public. It’s also an open mic, so be sure to arrive around 8:30 pm if you want to sign-up and perform.
History of Fergie’s Comedy Show
An open mic existed at Fergie’s for quite some time. But it was not always run by the same people under the same name. Here’s the rich history of this room in the Philadelphia comedy scene.
Imagine if The Avengers were comedians, and then named their show after themselves. That’s Tight Six. It all started many years ago local comedians Aaron Nevins and Joe Bell scoured Philadelphia in hopes to find a space to perform. They wanted a new open mic. Something better than what the city offered at the time. When they found Fergie’s Pub it was a match made in heaven. The upstairs space was perfect for their needs. With their ingenious marketing and clout in the Philly comedy scene, Fergie’s Pub became a standard for comedy.
Aaron and Joe are only two pieces of this awesome puzzle. Elise Thompson-Hohl, Dan Vetrano, Becca Traibin, and Mikey Garcia round out the rest of the Tight Six roster. The gang crushed it every Sunday. The event was a comedy show meets a concert. Besides the open mic, each week there was a new band that would play before the comedy show and at the intermission.
Tight Six eventually handed off the Sunday night slot to a new crew of comedians. The group wanted to go on and do bigger and better things. For example Aaron Nevins cofounded Good Good Comedy Theater, and Mikey Garcia allegedly abused a bunch of women.
The new crew took the reins from Tight Six and rebranded the comedy open mic As Honorable Mention. Jon Lalu, Chris Whitehair, Abeeku Cobbina, and Mike Alloy made sure the focus was on the comedy. Fans could count on 4-5 hours of solid comedy from Philly’s funniest.
But like many good things it must come to an end. One by one the Honorable Mention crew moved out of the area. Jon, Chris, and Mike all made their way to NYC. Abeeku just vanished after allegedly stealing a ton of money from comedians and his roommates.
Fergie’s Comedy Show
Headed up by John Deary and Jillian Markowitz, Fergie’s Comedy Show is pure and simple. Great comedy with no drama. John and Jillian are treasures, and fan favorites of the Philadelphia comedy scene. And we couldn’t think of a better team to run an open mic.
John Deary manages to make the sad things in life hilarious. His matter of fact delivery on heavy subject matter creates a fantastic comedic tension.
Jillian Markowitz bursts with lovable charm. Between her comedy songs on the ukulele and her affinity for all things nerdy, audiences can’t help themselves from falling in love with Jillian.
