Philadelphia Comedy Calendar
This calendar highlights our favorite local comedy shows in Philadelphia. There are some fantastic theaters for comedy in Philly, but they have their own calendars. The purpose of this page is to highlight the underground shows happening in bars and other unusual venues. If you want to discover the Philly comedy scene, this is the premier resource.
Types of Shows
There are four main types of comedy shows: stand-up, improv, sketch, and concept. Stand-up is when someone is on stage telling jokes. These types of shows might be described as a showcase, which means an ensemble cast of comedians take turns on stage. An improv show is when a team of performers do comedic scenes inspired by a suggestion from the audience, and the show itself. Sketch shows are acted out scenes with scripts, props, and comedic actors. Think SNL. And finally concept shows are the catch all for everything else. Usually these types of shows are a hybrid of the other three types. A good example is Calendar Boys. It’s a fake pageant show where comedians battle to be that month’s Calendar Boy. They deliver rehearsed bits, improvise answers to questions, and perform stand-up comedy to determine a winner.
